The self- advocacy course was 8 sessions long. Part of the course was learning about assertiveness and being able to stand up for yourself. We were informed of our human rights and entitlements. We were made aware of the advocates available to us in the community. We also reflected on the different forms of communication we use. Everyone contributed to the fund of knowledge we gained through the course.
There was a presentation of the certificates given to the people who participated by Liam Hennessy, Jim Walsh & Margaret Webb. Margaret Webb spoke of the relevance if the course to our mental health recovery and Liam Hennessy made apt use of poetic quotations to speak of the hope inspired aspect of the course. This was followed by mince pies, sandwiches, tea & coffees. I think everyone found the presentation a fitting conclusion to the work put in by the facilitators and participants and the atmosphere was of a convivial and celebratory occasion enjoyed by all who were presented. We would recommend all other participants to do it!
